"Ubuntu" is the Zulu term meaning "I am because of you", or connectivity through human kindness, community, and mutual caring for all. It was with these values that the Ubuntu Music Therapy Initiative was started in the summer of 2014.

The Ubuntu Music Therapy Initiative aims to develop sustainable music therapy practices in East Africa and beyond. This music therapy initiative is entirely operated by music therapy students and AMTA board-certified music therapists. The bulk of student leadership consist of current students and alumni from Berklee College of Music within the Music Therapy Degree Program.

The Ubuntu Music Therapy Initiative strives to create sustainable music therapy practices in underserved communities through advocacy and education.
